I totally agree with you, Bill - I've made the change and it does indeed sound better. Sometimes I tend to put in highfalutin' phrases that are ill-begotten. Thanks!

Would "if only" have a more idiomatic feel that "but that?" Assuming, of course, that idiomatic is what you want.
